Community Service Projects
Sewing With Grace
The quilt guild has had a group who meets to make charity quilts. Quilting with Grace meets at Grace Community United Methodist Church. Bonnie Taylor started this group around her kitchen table and they sewed quilts for AIDS babies. The group grew too many in number to kit in her kitchen so they moved to Grace Community United Methodist Church, 735 Main St NW, Bourbonnais.
Our group continues to sew every Wednesday at 9:00 AM at the church. We go out for lunch at 11:45 AM. We have donated fabric, patterns, irons and some sewing supplies for everyone to use. Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies. We share our knowledge and have formed many lasting friendships. Our groups has anywhere from 3-12 people each week.
In 2019, we donated over 100 quilts to:
Cunningham Home - Urbana, IL
CASA (Court Assisted Special Advocates) - Bradley, IL
Baby Fold - Bloomington, IL
Melissa Daycare - Hopkins Park
Lasting Impressions Daycare - Bourbonnais
United Methodist Church - UMCOR
Agape Community Outreach Ministries, Inc - Kankakee (homeless children)
Prairieview Lutheran Home - Danforth
Quilts for local veterans
We invite you to join us. Bring a smile and sew with friends. It is a great opportunity to share the love of quilting with each other!
Sweet Dreams
Sweet Dreams is the name of our pillowcase project. We make and donate pillowcases to Good Shepard Manor and local hospitals.
Cancer Quilts - Kankakee Quiltmakers Community Service Project 2014 - 2015
Members created six (6) beautiful quilts, 36”x36” that represent 6 cancers that have touched all of us. The quilts portray a story of grief for the loss of loved ones but give a feeling of hope to those who are fighting their battle with cancer. The six (6) cancers portrayed are Liver & Lymphoma, Esophageal & Stomach, Breast, Brain, Lung and All Cancers. The quilts have been framed and are on display at the Presence St. Mary’s Oncology Department in Bourbonnais.
Riverside Hospital Heart Pillows
Several members make heart shaped pillows (kits purchased by hospital) to be given to patients who had open heart surgery. Each pillow is signed by all staff members who were involved with the surgery. It is used for compression when the patient has to cough.
